the church has left the building
part 1

by Derek Flanigan

Be the Church:
“don’t ‘go to church’ – be the church”

Dreaming of a church that leaves the building – a seed was sown
‘I believe God planted a seed in me that day - a desire to see the Church mobilised to touch the lives of others with the good news of the Kingdom and for us to be church in and to the world.’

The meat is on the street – John Wimber

Projects and Lifestyle – the one feeds the other…
• Projects help us ‘get out of the boat’ and leads to lifestyle
• Lifestyle: we need to have a lifestyle of sharing Jesus with others

Col 3:17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Church Gathered:

What did the early church look like?

Act 2:42-47
Community of priests
1Pe 2:5 – 12 note vs. 12 … they may see your good deeds..
We have to walk the talk… what is our witness?

When the Christian missionaries not only proclaimed in Christ the distinctions between slave and free man were done away as surely as those between Jew and Greek, but actually lived in accordance with their principles, then this had enormous appeal. Not only to be accepted by a different class, but to be adopted into the very family of God – Michael Green

John 13:34-35 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. (35) By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

So isn’t it enough to just be gathered and love each other?

The Church gathered is great and very necessary for the witness of the church, but it is only half of the pizza!

The farmhouse and the harvest field
Which one should get the most attention?

The Church scattered:

Ambassadors of the Kingdom…
2 Co 5:15-21 note vs. 19 ‘He has committed to us the message of reconciliation.’

2Co 3:2-3
‘We might be the only Bible some people get to read’
And people will read us whether we want them to or not…

‘We are small change in the pockets of God and He can spend us any way He wants to’
Isa 58:6-12 note vs.10 ‘and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.’

It was no official policy of the Jerusalem church to evangelise this great city. On the contrary it was a spontaneous movement arising from Christian men who could not keep quiet about Jesus their Lord. [M.Green]
