Living Life to the Full

by Derek

"matters not how a man dies, but how he lives"
~ Samuel Johnson

John 10:10 – As believers we are supposed to be able to live life to the full because of Jesus

Eph 5:16  making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
Kaizen – the Japanese concept of improving a business in small daily increments. In life it can be changing one thing for the better each day.
The Japanese word "KAIZEN" means improvement, improvements without spending much money, involving everyone from managers to workers, and using much common sense. The Japanese way encourages small improvements day after day, continuously. The key aspect of KAIZEN is that it is an on-going, never-ending improvement process. It's a soft and gradual method opposed to more usual western habits to scrap everything and start with new. [Wikipedia – emphasis mine]
Common ways of attempting to live life to the full:
  1. The pursuit of pleasure – the need to be entertained at all times
  2. The pursuit of possessions – The need for more and more
  3. Chasing the ‘big idea’ or the big dream – trying to realise a dream in one big step instead of recognising the small steps that we take towards our dreams becoming a reality… the result is always chasing ‘the dream’ but never quite reaching it.
”A life lived in fear is a life half lived” [motto Australian Film Industry]
Fear or anxiety:
Fear or anxiety are common restrictions to living ones life to the full… the Bible does not say we wont ever fear or we wont ever be anxious but it does tell us how to handle it when we are fearful or anxious.
Philippians 4:6-7
1 Peter 5:7
Ephesians 5: 8-17 [The Message]
You groped your way through that murk once, but no longer. You're out in the open now. The bright light of Christ makes your way plain. So no more stumbling around. Get on with it! (9) The good, the right, the true--these are the actions appropriate for daylight hours. (10) Figure out what will please Christ, and then do it. (11) Don't waste your time on useless work, mere busywork, the barren pursuits of darkness. Expose these things for the sham they are. (12) It's a scandal when people waste their lives on things they must do in the darkness where no one will see. (13) Rip the cover off those frauds and see how attractive they look in the light of Christ. (14) Wake up from your sleep, Climb out of your coffins; Christ will show you the light! (15) So watch your step. Use your head. (16) Make the most of every chance you get. These are desperate times! (17) Don't live carelessly, unthinkingly. Make sure you understand what the Master wants. - [Emphasis mine]
365 Days in a Year
86400 seconds in a Day
Therefore: Make the most of every chance you get. These are desperate times!
So you want a day off. Let's take a look at what you are asking for. There are 365 days per year available for work. There are 52 weeks per year in which you already have 2 days off per week, leaving 261 days available for work. Since you spend 16 hours each day away from work, you have used up 170 days, leaving only 91 days available. You spend 30 minutes each day on coffee break which counts for 23 days each year, leaving only 68 days available. With a 1 hour lunch each day, you used up another 46 days, leaving only 22 days available for work. You normally spend 2 days per year on sick leave. This leaves you only 20 days per year available for work. We are off 5 holidays per year, so your available working time is down to 15 days. We generously give 14 days vacation per year which leaves only 1 day available for work and I'll be darned if you are going to take that day off!
