Hearing the still small voice in the storm (Elijah)
1Ki 19:11-13 The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. (12) After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. (13) When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
We serve a God who answers with fire (Elijah) 1kings 18: 32-36
Do we expect to hear the voice of God?
Hearing God and Intimacy with God go together (God restores to Elijah the sense of His Presence)
Joh 10:4-5 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. (5) But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice."
Joh 10:14 "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me--
Joh 10:15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father--and I lay down my life for the sheep.
Joh 10:16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.
Joh 10:27-28 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. (28) I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.
Concentrate on the real thing not the counterfeit, when you know the voice of God you will not recognise the voice of the stranger and know it is not God
Does it bring you closer to God? Does it encourage intimacy with the Father?

The Word of God:
The primary way God speaks to us is through the Bible.
Be a regular relentless reader of the word of God
We need to lower the ambient noise in our lives to receive and hear what God is speaking to us.
Romans 10:17, "Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God"
Bill Johnson, "Faith comes by hearing - not by having heard - the Word of God."
Our faith for today is dependant on hearing today.
Joh 16:13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
Joh 16:14He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.
Some pointers Bill Hybels gives on promptings of the Holy Spirit in ‘whispers from God’:
Ask God Directly - Is This Prompting Truly From You? He will confirm it to you.
Is It Scriptural?
Is It Wise?
Is It In Tune With Your Own Character? - Does it align with how God has wired you?
What Do The People You Trust Most Think About It?
We may never hear an audible voice but He puts thoughts in our minds that are not our thoughts.
We need to have a passion to know God not just know about Him, we can have our theology down pat and still not know Him
(Paul… Php 3:10I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,…Php 3:8What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ )
[no slide] Jer 24:7I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.
You cannot lose through bad works what you cannot attain through good works

Bill Hybels ‘Whisper’ clip
O give me Samuel's ear
O give me Samuel's ear,
An open ear, O Lord,
Alive and quick to hear
Each whisper of Thy Word,
Like him to answer at Thy call,
And to obey Thee first of all. Amen.
